M.D., PhD. Tsitsino Shurgaya – plastic surgeon, expert in correcting age related facial changes and facial paralysis. One of few people in the world who is a Plastic Surgeon Specialist.
"It's easy to damage the facial nerve but very difficult to treat it after"She graduated from Tbilisi State Medical Institute in 1981. Since 1985, was in residency followed by postgraduate and doctoral studies at the Central Institute of Advancement of Medics (currently Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education – RMAPO).
In 1992 she defended her thesis on “Neyromioplastic operations in paralysis and paresis of mimic muscles”. In 1995 she defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic: “A surgical algorithm for treatment of patients with facial paralysis.
Currently she is working in the Department of Cosmetology, Maxillofacial and Plastic surgery RMAPO.
Dr. Shurgaya has more than 100 publications and scientific papers, 10 personal methodologies of operation on the face and is a co-author of two guides on plastic surgery.
To date, she completed more than 5 000 operations to remove age-related facial changes and has over 25 years experience.
The main scientific research focus of Dr. Shurgaya is all methods to rejuvenate the face, neck and eyelids, and treatment of facial paralysis. She also performs microsurgical operations for defects of the face and is able to restore facial nerve damage (facial nerve damage may occur after viral infections, strokes, accidents and previous unsuccessful plastic surgeries).
Dr. Shurgaya is a member of:
- European Association of Plastic Surgeons
- World Association of Plastic Surgeons
- Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (SPRAS)
- European Association for Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery
Facelift (Rhytidectomy) – Dr. Shurgaya performs the face lift surgery with a modern technique that involves operating in three layers taking into consideration the facial configuration of the patient in three dimensions to preserve the individuality. The technique involves separating the skin followed by a full SMAS lift all over the face then the work is done on the deepest (third) layer. After that SMAS and or bicularis oculi (circular muscles around the eyes) are lifted and tightly secured. Also a frequently used technique is a subperiosteal midface lift (cheek lift) and suspension of soft tissue on the edge of the orbits to reduce nasolabial folds. The skin is pulled uniformly across upper, middle and bottom facial zones.
If required the technique is combined with many additional interventions:
· front or side platysmoplasty (suturing the subcutaneous neck muscles, if necessary fixation of soft tissue to the mandible bone for a clean neck-chin angle and the perfect cleavage)
· brow lift or forehead lift with the correction of the medial or lateral edges of the eyebrows
· Liposuction of the neck/chin area
The facelift is often done together with blepharoplasty, the surgery of the upper and lower eyelids.
The operation is not superficial and far more advanced than a skin or endoscopic type of surgery. The full rehabilitation period typically takes about 30 days however is completely individual (depends on age or overall medical condition, the medication of the patient etc.).
Ability to perform this type of advanced surgery requires fundamental knowledge of the facial nerve, plastic surgery and microsurgery. This allows for an original, deeper approach to facial tissues and therefore the outcome of a more effective and lasting results.
How long does the surgery take?
A facelift takes from 4 to 5 hours.
When do the stitches come out?
The stitches are removed 15 days after surgery.
When will the swelling go down?
Your swelling and bruising should reduce significantly within the first two weeks. Small amounts of swelling may remain for several months but won't be noticeable. This is very individual and some patients have no visible swelling after two weeks but don’t be alarmed if it takes longer.
Can you shower?
Typically 48 hours after surgery you can shower but washing your head should be done no earlier than 72 hours after.
What about physical activity?
You can resume physical activity after a month.
When can I resume other cosmetic procedures? (Botox, Mesotherapy, Peels, Massages etc.)
Most can be resumed after 1 month. Some mesotherapy is even recommended to help the healing process.

another 365 days passed and we all have once again looped around the sun. Everything seems to be rotating along including our lives. It seems just yesterday I was getting ready for the millennium celebration and now it's 07. Well I won't bore nobody with a recap of this past year because frankly in the grand scheme of the Earth revolving around the Sun and the billions of other planets out there what difference does it make what happened to me or anyone else on this little planet. I think that's what we have to learn, expand our focus a little, and refrain from letting the little things get to us.

sunny days
are always great, but when they are in the Caribbean part of the world they are even greater! I finally got my lazy bum down to write a couple words about my recent trip to Cancun. This was my first experience there and I have to say it's a great place to party and/or just relax and roast yourself on a picture perfect beach. Now the the typical discussion that takes place every time I go to one of these all inclusives is the number of days it's perfect to stay at one of these places. Well let me tell you... when you are standing in the crystal clear turquoise ocean with pretty little fish swimming around you and say to a perfectly fit Colombian stewardess in her yellow bikini "I think 14 days here is too much, 10 would be just perfect", at that time with the sun melting your brains it may seem alright. However when you return to Toronto and it's -5c with a wind chill on a good winter day you realize how wrong you were! 10 or 14 days is not enough and you want to go right back. So for next time I will personally have a number like 3 months in mind for that perfect number, who was I kidding!

that is how I feel about cheap labour which spawns horribly poor quality. My laptops dead hard drive is a perfect example. I mean how good can it be if the bunch of poor suckers making the parts for it get paid peanuts, why would they spend any time at all ensuring the part is sound, for what reason? What is the cause of all this crap that's made in some remote locations where the person making the part haven't even heard of a computer before the factory was built beside his little village. What stands behind all this... well it's Globalization. We all know it and we all love it, until you get your car tire recall, laptop battery explodes, hard drive crashes after only two years of use, cell phone buttons don't work, etc. etc. etc. Well at least it's job security for the little village people who are quick to make the crappy replacement parts.

I've been working on my photoblog for the past few days, I'll try and post a new image every day or every few days there... so go check it out, you can add it to your rss feed, if you know what that is. Anyway, you can rate the images if you like and leave a comment to, good or bad whether you like it or not, I'm all ears. If you want to go and see the previous posts you just need to click on the image itself or on the 'previous' link under the image. There is a calendar that shows on which date images were added and you can link to that day by clicking on it as well.I'm now drained and am off to watch 'Heroes'. Since I hardly watch any TV this is quite a commitment. This new show is supposed to absorb my attention like 'Lost' did last year... I'm off that show now, it just never ends, there is no resolution it's like watching a movie where there is no end it just keeps going and going and going keeping you on the edge all the time. Next on the list is 'Entourage'.

Pacific coast HWY 1 drive from San Francisco to LA, I highly recommend, it's a very nice scenic driveof all the wonderful memories of the places you see when you are traveling, how can you not want to move around this little planet of ours and just see different parts of it? I remember one time I met someone who mentioned to me in passing while I was describing my most recent escape from my local calling area that he's never been outside his province (Ontario). I was quite shocked to hear that. I mean we are not living in an age when you need three days horse ride to get to another town 1500km away, there is planes, trains and automobiles. You can of course argue, what if you just don't know where to go? Well, my impression was that at this day and age with all the media we're exposed to, not to mention good old books and especially the Internet you are bound to come across something that would spark your interest and subsequently get your buns off your well worn couch. All those who live in the still undiscovered and underprivileged parts of this Earth I exclude and excuse. Now this thought has never even crossed my mind before I heard that this loon never stepped foot in another major city even if it were in the same country. So no matter how shocking, there are people out there who have no desire to travel and experience something other than their home town. Beware!
